Brazil Passport & Visa Photo Requirements (USA)

Brazil uses three different photo sizes depending on your pathway: 2×2" for passport at US consulates, 3.5×4.5 cm for the e-Visa portal, and 5×7 cm for under-5 in Brazil. Getting the wrong one causes rejections.

Common Gotchas

  • CPF required for passport processing (law since Jan 2024)
  • Males 18–45: Must prove military service compliance
  • Dual citizens: Must enter Brazil on Brazilian passport

Age-Specific Photo Rules

Brazil has one notable exception — newborns can have eyes closed — but no relaxed sizing for any age.

Baby (Under 1)

  • Newborns only: eyes closed is allowed (Federal Police)
  • Older infants: eyes closed = refusal
  • No obstructions (pacifiers, blankets, toys)
  • In Brazil: bring 5×7 cm photo (under 5)
  • Passport valid only 1 year

Child (1–17)

  • Same photo standards as adults
  • No relaxed expression rules published
  • Under 5 in Brazil: must bring 5×7 photo
  • Avoid adornments/hair covering face
  • Under 18: both parents sign for visa & passport

Adult & Senior (18+)

  • Standard rules: white background, neutral expression
  • e-Visa: no spectacles, no smile/teeth
  • No published senior accommodations
  • Males 18–45: military service compliance needed
  • Passport valid 10 years

Why Brazil Photos Get Rejected

The most common failures — especially the size mismatch across pathways.

Wrong Size for Pathway

Using 2×2 for e-Visa (needs 3.5×4.5cm) or 5×7 for US consulate (needs 2×2).

Spectacles in e-Visa

The portal explicitly says no spectacles — easy to miss if you only read "2×2 passport-style."

Child Obstructions

Toys, pacifiers, bows, blankets, or hair covering the face — explicitly cited as refusal grounds.

Photo Too Old

For children: Federal Police warns photos can be refused if the child no longer resembles the photo.

Print 6 Photos for $0.16

Since Brazilian passport photos at US consulates are the same 2×2 format as US passports, a 4×6 print template fits 6 copies. Print at Walmart for $0.16 and cut to size.

Retail passport photo services charge $16.99–$17.99 for the same 2×2 format you can print yourself.

Total cost: $6.99 + $0.16 = $7.15 for 6 photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

The consular page says "2×2 passport-style," but the e-Visa portal itself specifies 3.5×4.5 cm (413×531 px). Prioritize the portal's spec to avoid upload rejection. They're not the same size.

At US consulates, yes — both are 2×2 inches (51×51mm) with a white background. But e-Visa uploads and in-Brazil applications (5×7cm for under-5) use different sizes.

Only newborns are allowed to have eyes closed. For all other infants and children, closed eyes will be refused by the Federal Police.

Yes, since April 10, 2025. The e-Visa costs $80.90 and is processed online. A traditional consular visitor visa costs $185 for US passport holders.

No. Brazilian consular guidance explicitly states that Brazilian citizens must travel with a Brazilian passport when entering Brazil.

By mail: about 20 business days from receipt of your envelope. In-person: can be same-day issuance. All requests must go through e-Consular online triage first.

CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas) is a Brazilian tax identification number. Since January 2024 (Law 14.534/2023), it's required for passport processing. Brazilian consulates can help you obtain one.
