How to Take a Proper Passport Photo

1. Set Up Your Background

• Stand in front of a plain, solid-colored background—ideally white or light gray—with no patterns, textures, or objects behind you. For best results with background removal, stand at least 2 feet (60 cm) away from the background to minimize shadows and keep your outline sharp.
• Ensure the area is evenly lit with natural light or soft indoor lighting to avoid shadows on your face or background. Avoid strong backlighting or side lighting.
• Wear clothing that contrasts with the background color (for example, avoid white tops if the background is white).

2. Position the Camera

• Place the camera at eye level, about 1.5 meters (5 feet) away from you.
• Avoid selfies. Have someone else take the photo or use a tripod and timer.

3. Pose Correctly

• Face the camera directly with a neutral expression.
• Keep both eyes open and mouth closed.
• Remove glasses, hats, and head coverings unless required for religious or medical reasons.

4. Capture the Photo

• Center your head in the frame; your head should occupy 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm) of the image's height.
• The final photo should be 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) in size.
• Use high-resolution settings. The image must be clear, sharp, and in color.
